Converting Gasoline to Propane

Convert gasoline to propaneMany people have asked why would you convert a perfectly good gasoline engine over to propane?  I must admit, that is a good question.  The main driving force behind this conversion is to take the issues with a carburetor completely out of the picture.  Do not get me wrong, the Rochester carburetor is an excellent piece of equipment.  On 75% of the trails, it works flawlessly.  The only issues that arise come during extreme angles and bouncing around on rocky terrain.  It can be really frustrating to climb a technical route and have the carburetor die half way through.  I have two choices, convert to fuel injection or convert to propane.  I opted for propane since there are no electrical components or computers.  It is simple, proven technology that burns clean and is actually just a bolt-on solution.

Curing a Series Vapor Lock

holley_fuel_pumpFunny how things happen.  At Safari 2010, I had someone ask me if they ever had a problem with vapor lock on my Series.  I said no but I now have to change my statement.  Well in this case, it is not the fuel line but the actual mechanical fuel pump.  This article will go through the steps in identifying and curing this ailment.

Winter Work Day 2010

adoptatrailWith the trails being closed for winter, a group of CROC members headed out on nice March weekend in order to make some trail modifications on the Rocky Mount trail (the trail our club has adopted).  We knew we had some heavy work to do so we brought out the big guns to help out.

Weekend in Harlan KY (Nov 2010)

harlanA small group of CROC members decided to head out once again to KY for Harlan County.  One member had two sons that returned from Afghanistan and were a few days late for URE! so we planned an outing for KY.  Both were itching to try out their new trucks and this seemed like a good place for a maiden voyage.

Building a New Series Tailgate

lwLast season was pretty hard on the Lightweight's tailgate.  Since I hang my spare on the tailgate, everyone figure it is safe to give my truck a bump on the trails.  In most cases that was true until the last bump.  After that, the tire carrier rattled to no end (yes, I could even hear it over the engine and all the other rattles).

London To Brighton 2009

Our club held a raffle during the summer where the winner would be flown from the US to London, England to attend the London to Brighton rally.  The South London & Surrey Land Rover Club (SLSLRC) holds this event every year and was nice enough to pick up our winner and host him for the entire weekend.  The lucky winner was Jonathan Galpin.  Here is his story.

Adding Armour to Our Rovers

armorWhile out on our trip in Harlan, one of the CROC members (Ric) mentioned that he really needed to start protecting his rover.  Since it is his daily driver, he did not want to damage it if he could help.  With that comment, we decided to have him come down one weekend and we would get him setup.

Protecting The Underside of a Series

lwAfter a couple of rough weekends at Uwharrie, the Lightweight needed a bit of a fix.  The main cross member (the one that is welded to the frame) was in very poor shape.  In fact it had a 4 inch gaping hole on one side.  During the rebuild over the winter, we did not have time to fix this but now something needs to be done.  While doing this, why not add a skid plate to protect the xfer box and tranny brake?
