Defender

Defender ( 9 Files )

The Land Rover Defender is the product of continued development of the original utility Land Rover Series I launched in 1948. Using the basic yet robust underpinnings of a ladder frame chassis and aluminium body, the Defender is available in a huge variety of body types. Defenders are used for a very wide variety of purposes- from agricultural and industrial users to a large number of military customers. Defenders are also a common choice for use on expeditions and surveys throughout the world.
Discovery

Discovery ( 6 Files )

There have been three generations of the vehicle, which is less expensive than the company's top Range Rover model. The Discovery was introduced in the late 1980s and is the most popular model from Land Rover. It is less utilitarian than the Defender, but it is very competent off road.  The Discovery Series I was introduced into the United Kingdom in 1989.  The Series II Discovery debuted in 1999.  On 2 April 2004, Ford introduced a new Discovery 3 (or LR3 in North America) for the 2005 model year.

Range Rover

Range Rover ( 7 Files )

The Range Rover was first introduced in 1970 and is still in production today. There have so far been two major model changes. The original model is known by some enthusiasts as the Range Rover Classic; the second generation bore the internal Land Rover code name "P38A" and the latest generation has the Land Rover designation "L322".
Military

Military ( 14 Files )

Rover's engineering director, Maurice Wilks, had a property and land in Wales where he used a war surplus American Jeep. One day his brother Spencer, the company's managing director, asked him what he would do when the Jeep wore out. Maurice answered, "Buy another one, I suppose - there isn't any thing else". This remark led directly to a decision being made that Rover would design and manufacture a light four wheel drive utility vehicle, using many existing components from their cars but with a chassis and transmission inspired by the successful Jeep, and with simple bodywork, made from aluminium to get around the problem of steel rationing.  Thus began the start of military Land Rover vehicles.
Series

Series ( 87 Files )

The Land Rover Series I, II, and III (commonly referred to as "Series" Land Rovers, to distinguish them from later models) were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep, with which it also originally shared many parts.  Land Rover say that 70% of these vehicles ever made are still in use today- a claim first made in the 1992 brochure and repeated many times since, being much publicised when cited by Richard Hammond of the BBC's Top Gear. Series models feature leaf-sprung suspension with selectable two- or four-wheel drive.
